Often when working with my clients, they just want someone to tell them what to do! Their circumstances may range from how to deal with troubled employees and dysfunctional teams to strategic opportunities for their careers to everything in between. The amazing thing is that all of us already have the answers within us; the answers are often just hidden due to other pressures pushing on us.
I ran across a book which caught my eye a few months ago entitled, “The Right Questions.” There are a few questions from this book which may be helpful to many who are pondering their careers, their approaches, and simply their ‘choices’ in general. I wanted to share these for you to ‘sit with.’ It may be interesting to see what is revealed through this exploration.
- Am I looking for what is right or what is wrong?
- Will I use this situation as a catalyst to grow or will I use it to beat myself up?
- Will this choice empower me or does is dis-empower me?
- Will this choice bring me long-term fulfillment or short-term gratification?
- Will this choice propel me toward an inspiring future or will it keep me stuck in the past?
These questions are not limited to our self – they may also be applied to our companies, organizations, schools and non-profit teams. It may be fun to print these out, put them in your journal or briefcase, and when faced with a decision consider these questions as pointers to help you make your choice! Try it.
Outstanding, Kristin! I had to read that book at a previous employer and it was excellent at the time, and it still is. I am printing them out right now. Thanks for sharing.
